Tritons Split with Royals

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – In double header action Saturday, the Eckerd College baseball team dropped game one to Warner University 5-4, before taking game two, 9-3.

Matt MacMahon drove a pitch down the right field line bringing in Grant Banko who had reached on a walk, for the first run of the game. James Petika scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Jake O'Rourke making it 2-0 in the second inning.

The Royals took a 3-2 lead in the fourth with a bases loaded double. Lucas Luopa continued his hot start to the season with a triple to left center in the bottom of the inning driving in MacMahon and James Petika to retake the lead, 4-2.

Warner managed two more runs in the seventh and Eckerd could not come back falling 5-4.

Luopa and MacMahon combined for six hits and three RBI's in game one. Zach Hoppe was tagged with the loss.

The Triton offense unloaded in the second game for nine runs on 12 hits.

Mike Abraham drove in Luopa in the bottom of the first to put his team on the board. Later in the same inning, MacMahon continued to swing the hot stick with a single to center plating O'Rourke. The Tritons then added one run in the second and the third.

The Royals did all of their offensive damage getting three runs across in the first three innings. The Eckerd offense would not let up knocking in five more runs in the contest to lock down the 9-3 victory.

Carter Cashman was a perfect 3 for 3 in the game with a walk while driving in one and scoring three times. O'Rourke posted two singles while bringing in one. Seven other Tritons added hits in the game.

Jared Habershaw earned his first victory of the season in the win. The bullpen totaled four innings pitched giving up one run while striking out five.

Eckerd (2-2) will take on Colorado Christian University for a nine inning affair on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
