Softball Takes Two From Southeastern

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – It was an exciting opening day for the Eckerd College softball team sweeping the double header against Southeastern University taking game one, 2-1, in walk off fashion and then unloading for a 14-5 win in game two.

Runs were at a premium in game one. Amber Hay toed the rubber for the Tritons allowing one hit through the first six innings of the ball game. The Eckerd offense managed to scatter three hits in the game leading up to the sixth inning.

Sydney Dinelli led off the bottom of the sixth with a double to get things going. Kirby Parnell, who pinch ran for Dinelli, scored off a single from Kaycie Duncan to put EC up 1-0. After six scoreless innings from Hay, Southeastern managed to get on the board in the top of the seventh to knot the game up at 1-1.

Brittany Mitchell drove the ball into the gap for a double to put the winning run on second to start of the bottom half of the inning. Carrie Shere reached first on an infield single before Kara Oberer was intentionally walked to load the bases. Samantha Sharpe stepped into the box and drove in Mitchell for the game winning RBI and the 2-1 victory.

Hay went the distance for the complete game win allowing only three hits and one run while striking out five.

Game two was the complete opposite of game one with the flood gates opening for the Triton offense.

Oberer scored in the first inning off the bat of Duncan for an early 1-0 lead. EC then unloaded for seven runs in the second and four more runs in the third. The Fire were not going to go down quietly plating three runs in the third and two more in the top of the fourth.

Eckerd was able to end the game in the fifth inning with RBI's from Mitchell and Shere for the eight run rule victory.

Dinelli went 3 for 3 in the game while Hay and Mitchell collected two hits each. Carolyn Griffin earned the win in game two going four innings.

Eckerd (2-0) will take part in their annual Spring Invitational beginning Friday at the Eddie C. Moore Sports Complex in Clearwater.
