Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Continuing their winningest season in program history, the Eckerd College women's basketball team took down Florida Southern on Wednesday night, 73-65.
The win made for a clean sweep of the Mocs on the season taking the first game back in January on the road, 69-58.
Eckerd jumped out in front to an 11-5 lead after the first five minutes of play. FSC shot their way back into the game not allowing EC to get too far out in front. With 8:30 remaining in the first half, the Mocs took their first lead of the game going up by one, 18-17.
After three ties and three lead changes, Florida Southern grabbed a three point lead in the final minute before halftime.
Jordyn Alexander put in a layup to bring it to a one point ball game just before the half. The Tritons went into the locker room trailing, 26-25.
The second half quickly turned into a back and forth battle.
Rana Thomas hit a jumper to give her team the lead just before the Moc's answered with a three to regain control.
Margaret Sundberg ended the stalemate with a deep three to put her team up four. Eckerd would score 10 unanswered points and grab a 47-36 lead with less than 13 minutes to play.
Sarah Ammons dropped the ball in off the glass to give the Tritons their largest lead of the game, up by 15. FSC would not go away making one last ditch effort to get back in the game hitting a three at the 3:43 mark to get within four.
Ivana Grbic went to the line on back to back possessions hitting all four of her free throws to give her team some breathing room.
After outscoring the Mocs 48-39 in the second half, the Tritons walked away with the 73-65 victory.
"Our team came alive in the second half," said Head Coach,
Paul Honsinger. "We came out of the locker room and moved the ball really well creating several great opportunities that we were able to capitalize on"
Thomas ended the night leading all scorers with 27 points. It was the fourth time this season the senior totaled 25 or more points in a game.
Trine Kasemagi continues her stellar rookie season putting up 14 points while pulling down eight rebounds.
The Tritons have turned a negative into a positive after losing in an overtime thriller to Nova back on Feb. 4, the team has since won four in a row. With the first regional rankings coming out on Wednesday, EC finds themselves seventh in the South Region. They are one of four SSC teams in the top eight.
Eckerd (19-6, 9-5) will look to avenge an early season loss to the Buccaneers when they hit the road to take on Barry University (12-13, 4-9) on Saturday. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
