Box Score ST. LEO, Fla. – The Eckerd College women's basketball team continued their winning ways on Wednesday defeating Saint Leo University, 52-45.
The Triton offense got off to a slow start missing four of their first five shots, but quickly picked it up. The Lions held a 10-5 lead after the first five minutes of play before EC went up 13-12 with a layup by
Trine Kasemagi.
Eckerd proceeded to go on a 13-0 run spanning seven and a half minutes. The run was topped off by
Jordyn Alexander who put in buckets on back-to-back possessions giving the Tritons a 20-12 lead.
Rana Thomas and Kasemagi finished off the first half scoring going 4 for 4 from the free throw line sending EC into the locker room with a 25-18 lead.
The Tritons were an uncharacteristic 0 for 15 from behind the three point line in the first half. Eckerd made up for the misses with solid passes leading to buckets underneath the basket and free throw shooting.
After two layups by
Victoria Vine and Kasemagi,
Margaret Sundberg knocked down the team's first three of the game to go up 32-25. The Lions were resilient trying to stay in the game. Every time Saint Leo scored, the Tritons would have an answer.
The Lions hit a three to get within two of the Tritons. Sundberg came back with a shot clock beating three of her own to retain a five point lead. Saint Leo came down the court bringing the score to 38-35 before Alexander muscled her way in for two points off the glass.
Thomas put EC up 49-41 knocking down an open jumper with under three minutes remaining in regulation. The defense stayed strong and the Tritons came away with the 52-45 road win. It was Eckerd's lowest scoring output in a win this season, but extended the team's win streak to five games.
Thomas finished one rebound shy of a double-double with nine to go along with 10 points. Kasemagi ended the game with nine points and seven boards. Alexander came off the bench scoring eight points and pulling down five rebounds.
Eckerd (14-3, 5-2) will host Barry University (9-8, 1-5) in an SSC matchup on Saturday. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
