Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College softball team concluded its first Sunshine State Conference series versus Nova Southeastern University with a split on Saturday afternoon at the Turley Athletic Complex.

The Sharks (10-8, 1-2 SSC) took game one of the doubleheader 2-0, while the Tritons (11-7, 2-1 SSC) prevailed in game two, 3-1.

Nova Southeastern 2, Eckerd 0

After five scoreless innings, Nova Southeastern was able to put a run on the board in the sixth and seventh innings and hold off the Tritons' offense to close out a game one win.

Prior to the sixth inning, Tritons' pitcher Amber Hay retired 14 of 16 batters faced, including 3-up-3-down innings in the second, fourth and fifth innings. Hay gave up only two hits and one walk and struck out four in the loss.

In the sixth, NSU's Melanie Spicola reached base on a one-out single and would come home to score as a result of an Eckerd error. In the seventh inning, another error led to the Sharks' second run on a sacrifice fly.

Pitcher Jennie Von Doellen worked her third win of the year in the circle for the Sharks. Von Doellen tossed a complete game two-hitter and walked two while striking out four.

The Tritons tabbed just five baserunners with sophomore Kara Oberer reaching base three times. Oberer was 2-for-2 with a walk.

Eckerd 3, Nova Southeastern 1

Eckerd wasted little time in game two as it put up its first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.

Oberer led off the frame with a single to third base and Kaycie Duncan challenged Nova Southeastern's defense with a bunt, leading to a throwing error that would score Oberer.

The Tritons tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning on four hits. Oberer got things started for the Tritons again with a one-out single through the left side of the infield. Consecutive doubles from Jeffares and Duncan would score both runs to prompt a pitching change.

Junior pitcher Erin Dixson went the distance for Eckerd and earned her fourth win of the season. Dixson allowed one run on five hits and struck out four.

Eckerd will continue conference play against Florida Tech at home in a single game on Friday, March 7, at 7 p.m. EST followed by the Saturday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
