Women’s Basketball Heads to Georgia

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – After returning from two exhibition contests in Ohio, the Eckerd College women's basketball team will depart for Valdosta, Ga. on Friday for the Holiday Inn Conference Challenge.

The Tritons will open up the 2014-15 regular season against Valdosta State on Friday with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m. The contest will be the Blazers first game of the year as well. VSU finished 2013-14 with a 12-15 overall record and 7-13 inside the Gulf South Conference.

Eckerd and Valdosta met last year in St. Petersburg with the Blazers coming out on top, 65-58. Kayla Bowlin led EC with 17 points in a losing effort.

The game will have live stats available along with live video.

On Saturday, the Tritons will be back in action for their second game of the Challenge. EC will take on the University of West Georgia, also of the Gulf South Conference, beginning at 2 pm. Finishing last season 10-18, 7-13, the Wolves went on to upset the No. 3 seed Alabama-Huntsville in the opening round of the GSC Tournament in 2014.

Live stats will be available for the contest, but a video feed will not be available.

"The team is really excited to get the season started this weekend," said Head Coach, Paul Honsinger. "This being an opening weekend for everyone, we will look to concentrate on us, not the opponent."

Honsinger went on to say, "We have played Valdosta State really close the last few years, but West Georgia is an unfamiliar opponent, so we will just need to play our brand of basketball to be successful."

The Tritons will remain on the road before hosting the University of Puerto Rico – Mayaguez on Monday Nov. 24 for their home opener.
