LAKELAND, Fla. – Freshman outfielder
Kaycie Duncan homered and drove in three runs to help the Eckerd College softball program battle back and force a doubleheader split against Southeastern University on Tuesday afternoon.
After falling against the Fire (20-18 overall) in the opener by a tough score of 16-2 in five innings, the Tritons (19-32 overall) regrouped and held their ground to close out game two with the 5-4 victory.
Eckerd and Southeastern broke even on a twinbill for the second time this year after both teams squared off at the Turley Athletic Complex on Feb. 5.
Duncan drilled her first career home run with two outs in the third inning that gave the Tritons a 4-1 lead at the time. She raised her team-leading average to .360 on the season and additionally leads EC in runs batted in (36) and hits (54).
Duncan was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in the finale and also tied for the team lead in doubles with teammate
Kara Oberer by smacking her 10th of the spring in the first inning.
Senior pitcher
Logan Rohrbach put out the flames in the Southeastern offense by scattering eight hits in a seven-inning complete game, her second of the season. She was backed with a three-run first frame in EC's opening series of at-bats against Fire starter Emily Bryant.
Duncan's first-inning RBI double was preceded by a multiple base throwing error after Oberer laid down a sacrifice bunt. The throw sailed down the right-field line allowing sophomore
Sabrina Lolo and junior
Chelsea Jeffares to trot home.
Jeffares led off game two with a single and Lolo reached after being hit by a pitch.
Duncan deposited another RBI hit into right field in the fifth and Rohrbach allowed just one more run in the final three innings to preserve the final decision.
Southeastern scored 16 runs on 13 hits in the opener, taking advantage of seven Eckerd errors. The Fire erupted for eight runs in the second inning and five more in the third.
Jeffares put EC on the board with an RBI single in the top of the fifth and Duncan drew a bases-loaded walk for what would be her fourth RBI on the afternoon.
Rohrbach and fellow seniors
Kristen Schurr and
Sarah Agnew will be appearing in their final regular season homestand this weekend against Palm Beach Atlantic University.
The Tritons and Sailfish will begin the Saturday doubleheader at 2 p.m. with Senior Day ceremonies starting following the completion of game one.
