SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Eckerd College softball program nearly completed a late rally in the opener, but Sunshine State Conference leader Saint Leo University prevailed in a Saturday doubleheader by scores of 6-5 and 9-0 (5 innings).
In game one, the Tritons (18-31, 4-17 SSC) held a 3-2 lead at the end of the top of the sixth inning, but the Lions (34-14, 14-4 SSC) countered with four runs in their turn of the inning.
EC was just one run shy of tying things up in the top of the seventh after plating two with an RBI single by freshman
Kaycie Duncan and run-scoring groundout by sophomore
Brittany Mitchell.
The Tritons loaded the bases up in the sixth and capitalized on a bases-loaded walks patiently drawn by senior
Kristen Schurr and freshman
Stephanie Wolfrom. EC completed the three-run frame as senior
Sarah Agnew was beaned with the bases still loaded.
Celebrating her 19th birthday, freshman
Amanda Green recorded a two-out single in the fifth inning.
Senior
Logan Rohrbach went the distance in the circle for the Tritons to get the doubleheader going, scattering nine hits while striking out one. She quieted the Saint Leo offense for four straight innings to get the afternoon started.
Between the two teams, all the scoring came in a flurry in the final three innings to highlight the opener.
The Lions were able to score early and often in game two, using the strength of a four-run first inning to power past the Tritons as Sarah Steiner homered to help her cause as the winning pitcher.
Steiner allowed three hits against the Eckerd offense, walked two and struck out three. She was backed with additional run support in the form of a two-run second inning and three-run third frame.
The Tritons will rematch against Southeastern University on Tuesday afternoon in Lakeland. The doubleheader against the Fire will get underway at 3 p.m. with the first game.
