ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Senior
Kristen Schurr provided late heroics with a two-run walk-off homer to cap a wild six-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Eckerd College softball program clawed back to a doubleheader split against Webber International University on Wednesday night.
Schurr launched the game-winning shot with two outs into orbit over the fence in left center, capping a wild finish to a pair of high-scoring affairs, the latter offensive showcase turning a 15-13 EC conclusion.
The Tritons (18-28 overall) bounced back in a big way after the Warriors (17-17 overall) had taken game one, 15-5.
Down to its final six outs facing a 13-6 deficit through the top of the sixth, the Eckerd offense buckled down and went to work.
The Tritons picked up three of the runs in the sixth inning after junior
Nazley Wilson and freshman
Kirby Parnell led off the frame with a walk and single. Another single by sophomore
Sabrina Lolo loaded the bases and freshman
Kaycie Duncan laced a two-RBI hit up the middle.
Schurr completed the sixth-inning damage with a bases-loaded single of her own that brought home sophomore
Brittany Mitchell.
Parnell then had the defensive gem of the night after robbing WIU's Ashley Peterson of a home run to the deepest part of the park. Parnell reached her glove over the fence and brought the ball back in for a huge second out in the seventh.
Riding that momentum to head into the EC seventh, back-to-back singles by Lolo and freshman
Kara Oberer with an initial hit-by-pitch drawn by freshman
Amanda Green again loaded the bases.
Green led the inning off by reaching base, but a pair of quick flyouts to center field had seemingly closed the window of opportunity.
But after Duncan spoiled several pitches down the left-field side, she ripped a line drive inside the chalk on the right foul line to clear the bases with a three-run double make it a 13-12 lead for the Warriors.
In the next at-bat, Mitchell brought things all-square and tied the game at 13-13 with a sharp single to center to plate senior
Sarah Agnew. Schurr then unloaded on an offering from Jessica Sheffield for her second home run of the season.
It wasn't the first time the Tritons climbed out of a considerable hole in game two after EC negated a four-run lead by the Warriors in the first inning. The two teams combined for 10 runs in the opening stanza after the Tritons exploded for a six-run frame.
Green drove in the tying and go-ahead runs in the first to knock out WIU starter Kim Martin after she recorded just one out.

Logan Rohrbach struck out a career-best eight hitters in a combined 6 1/3 innings of work to even her record in the circle at 5-5 on the year.
WIU's Ashley Quigley ripped a pair of three-run homers in the opener and added her third blast of the night in game two. Quigley did more than enough to help her cause as the winning pitcher and Peterson provided additional support with a homer.
EC's Oberer slugged her 12th home run of the spring in game one, a solo shot to lead off the fifth. She is now just one home run shy of tying the single-season record of 13 set by program legend Sherry Howell back in 1990.
The Tritons will be on the road this weekend against Saint Leo University as the Sunshine State Conference starts to slow down. EC and the Lions will begin the series on Friday night at 7 p.m. followed by Saturday's twinbill starting at 1 p.m.
