ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.
– The Eckerd College women's soccer team brought a little extra motivation to the pitch in its 5-1 victory over Florida College at the Turley Athletic Complex on Friday night.

Uniformed in pink, the Tritons (7-4, 1-1 SSC) recognized junior Arie Anahory's mom, junior Sarah Trumbull's aunt and the many women around the country who have fought breast cancer.

Sophomore Colleen Owen headed the plans for the annual Pink Game in an effort to raise awareness for breast cancer -- the second leading cause of death in women -- and funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

"Every game we play for (former teammate) Rachel Price," Owen said. "To have another cause where we have people we want to play for and we want to prove we care about them, and that we're strong and we can fight for them – it's nice to do that."

The Tritons struck first on the scoreboard in the 18th minute. Taylor Tippett's shot was blocked, but she was able to corral the rebound and get another shot off past Florida College goalkeeper Macie Foreman.

The goal was Tippett's second of the season.

Senior Mia Whylly scored the only other goal the Tritons would need to pull out the win. In the 42nd minute, Whylly took a shot from close inside the box past a diving Foreman. The goal was Whylly's first of the season.

After the half, Eckerd cemented the win with three additional goals from sophomore Devon Morse, freshman Jordan Humbert and sophomore Lauren Monce.

With four goals and three assists, Morse is second on the team in points (11), while Monce added her second goal of the season. Humbert's goal was the first in her career at Eckerd.

Even down by five goals, the Falcons did not give up and prevented EC's shutout bid. In the 75th minute, freshman Teara Thomas snuck a goal past EC goalkeeper Christina Rosetti.

Rosetti played the final 46 minutes of the game after regular starting goalkeeper Morgan Crescent was sidelined due to an injury with 1:25 left in the first half.

The Tritons outshot the Falcons (7-6 overall) 26 to five, effectively collecting their second consecutive win after beating Florida Southern College on Tuesday night for a Sunshine State Conference victory.

Eckerd returns to play on the road against Lynn University in a conference match on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m. EST.
