ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Warner University's offense came alive this afternoon, using 22 hits to score 13 runs in a two-game sweep against the Eckerd College softball program, 4-2 and 9-5, at the Turley Athletic Complex.
Royals' junior shortstop Tiffani Upchurch used six hits to drive in three runs on the day to help Warner (4-2, 0-0 TSC) defeat the Tritons.
Eckerd (4-11, 0-0 SSC) sophomore pitcher
Kaitlyn Dougherty was tagged with the game-one loss, as she gave up nine hits and allowed four earned runs. Dougherty had two strikeouts on the outing.
Down four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning of game one, the Tritons put together four consecutive hits to rally back.
Sophomore
Chelsea Jeffares and Dougherty each drove in a run to cut the lead to two. However, Warner senior starting pitcher Kaitlyn Grimail retired six of the final seven batters to close out game one with the win.
The Tritons' pitching had trouble with the Warner offense in game two, allowing nine runs off of 10 hits.
Warner junior second baseman and leadoff hitter Tabatha Martin went a perfect 4-for-4 and drove in two runs to ignite the Royals' offense.
EC freshman Jessica Sudler's bat came alive in game two, as she went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs. Sudler drove in the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning on a single to center field.
Senior
Kristen Schurr belted a two-run homerun to deep left field to plate courtesy runner
Nazley Wilson and extend the lead in the second inning, putting the Tritons up 3-0.
Senior pitcher
Alex Sasso was strong through the first three innings of play, managing to give up only two hits. However, a rough start to the top of the fourth ended her hopes of coming away with the win.
Sasso finished the day allowing only six hits, but was tagged with the decision in the loss.
