ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.
– In the final game of the 2012 calendar year for both programs, Adelphi (N.Y.) University used a late first-half run to gain momentum and hold off the Eckerd College women's basketball program on Sunday afternoon, 80-63.

Senior forward Krystal Charles led the Tritons (4-4, 1-0 SSC) with a season-high 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting to lead the offensive charge while junior Kristiana Stauere chipped in 14, accounting for 12 from three-point territory.

Do-it-all junior guard Sade Jackson was one rebound shy of a triple-double to lead the Panthers (7-3, 4-2 NE-10), scoring 19 points on a perfect 8-of-8 performance from the floor to go with 11 assists and three steals.

Jackson came in this afternoon's contest averaging 10.1 assists per game, tops in the nation.

Jackson led a balanced effort of five Adelphi players in double figures, joined by 14 each from Kelly Mannix and Lauren Nuss, 17 more from Jessica Kitrys and a dozen contributed from Samantha Milhaven.

The Panthers connected on a total of 11 three-point field goals while shooting over 62 percent in the second half.

After the Tritons went ahead 21-20 on a shot in the post by junior forward Liga Vente, the Panthers responded with a 17-0 run in the next 6:13 of the first half to pull ahead with a 37-21 advantage.

Jackson made three straight layups in that span while Nuss and Mannix started the run with back-to-back triples.

Nuss sank four field goals from long range coming off the bench, all in the first half.

She was matched by a stellar downtown effort from Stauere, who was 2-for-2 from long range and 2-for-2 from the free throw line in the first half. The junior added two more longballs in the second half, doubling her previous scoring best of seven points against Puerto-Rico Bayamon this year.

In the second half, the Panthers extended their edge to a 23-point cushion with 13:02 left in regulation after Jackson made another driving layup.

Eckerd whittled down the deficit to 14 with just under eight minutes to play, but Adelphi countered with back-to-back three pointers by the left-handed shooting Mannix to push the lead back to 20.

EC freshman guard Annie Armstrong scored all nine of her points in the second half. Vente finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

The Tritons shot 50 percent from the floor in the final period, but connected at a 27.6 percent rate in the first half (8-of-29).

EC will be back in action on its home court this weekend to begin the 2013 campaign, welcoming No. 17 Nova Southeastern University to the McArthur Center on Saturday to resume Sunshine State Conference play at 2 p.m.
