ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The old adage of 'when it rains, it pours' rang true in more than one sense as the Eckerd College women's soccer program put on an offensive display against Florida Christian College on Thursday night with a 9-0 shutout victory.
Not even the elements of the unpredictable weather could slow down the Tritons (6-2-2, 3-1-1 SSC) from storming to their fourth consecutive victory.
Scattered thunderstorms pummeled the area prior to game time and the 7 p.m. scheduled start was delayed briefly as both teams waited for lightning to subside.
Once the match started, the Tritons were unstoppable. EC fired a barrage of 29 shots, including 18 on goal, against the Florida College defense.
Eckerd was one goal shy of matching the team record for the most goals scored in a single game after the 1999 squad tallied 10 goals against Northwood University.
Sophomore
Arie Anahory and senior
Miranda Rivera each scored a goal and had two assists, freshman
Lauren Monce scored twice and another freshman,
Rae Antenucci, also scored for the first time in her young career.
Junior
Mia Whylly and senior
Adrianna Garcia netted their first goals of the season and senior
Meredith Mahoney scored her second goal of the fall.
Senior
Dana Treat recorded her team-leading fourth goal in the seventh minute.
The Tritons' defense limited the Suns (0-11 overall) to no shots in the shutout effort. Sophomore keepers
Lauren Fernandez and
Holly Buresh each spent 45 minutes in net on the evening.
After Anahory, the current Sunshine State Conference Offensive Player of the Week, opened the scoring the sixth minute, Treat answered under a minute later for the two-goal advantage.
It turned out to be a short night for some of the Triton starters as the lead swelled still early in the first half.
Monce showed off a strong leg with a blast inside the box that scooted past FCC's Megan Frazer and later showed precision and touch with a high-arcing ball that bounced out of the reach of the Suns' keeper.
She scored both of her goals in a quick two-minute span.
Whlly was one of the recipients for Rivera's two assists on the night as she broke free inside the box in the 23rd minute.
Garcia bent in a beautiful corner kick from the far side all the way into the side netting at the 26:52 mark in the first half that made the score 7-0.
Rivera capped the scoring by booting home the only goal in the second half in the 52nd minute.
The Tritons are back on the road in league play next Tuesday, heading to Fort Lauderdale to battle Nova Southeastern University. The Tritons and Sharks will get underway at 6 p.m.
