ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Florida Tech left-hander Jonathan Cornelius tossed a complete-game one-hitter to lead the visiting Panthers to a 1-0 win over the Eckerd College baseball team on Friday evening at the Turley Athletic Complex.
Cornelius (6-1) struck out 13, including three in the ninth, to help Florida Tech (21-13, 5-8 Sunshine State Conference) win for the third time in four outings.
Gus Fernandez provided the only run with an RBI double in the top of the ninth off Eckerd (12-18) starter
Joey Cuda.
Cuda (3-4) took the hard-luck loss, as the junior allowed just five hits and stuck out 10. It is the fifth time this year Cuda has struck out 10 or more batters in a game.
Bryant Gibson got the Tritons' lone hit with a bunt single in the seventh inning.
The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
