LAKE WALES, Fla. – The Eckerd College baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at Warner (Fla.) on Tuesday afternoon at Royals Field.
The ninth inning was the rough spot for Eckerd, as Warner scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to take a 3-2 win in the opener before Barrett Ringstaff's RBI single in the ninth inning of Game 2 provided the contest's only run.
Joe McLemore had two of Eckerd's five hits in the second game, and
Aaron Shapiro had a two-run single in the opener. The Tritons (15-23) were held to 11 hits overall.
Eckerd jumped out to a 2-0 lead in Game One, as Shapiro plated
Kevin Rea and
Wess Hollins with a two-out single in the second inning.
But after cutting the deficit to 2-1 in the sixth, the Royals (28-21-1) got two runs in their final at-bat thanks to RBI singles from Tyler Richardson and John McVey.
In the final game, Eckerd right-hander
Anthony Katchuk tossed six hitless innings – working around five walks – to keep the Tritons in a scoreless contest. But the Royals, who were held hitless through eight frames, tallied three singles in the ninth to cinch the win.
Eckerd will continue a nine-game road trip this weekend with a Sunshine State Conference series at Lynn. The first game is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday.
