LAKE WORTH, Fla. – Eckerd College junior right-hander Joey Cuda continued his early season dominance to help the Triton baseball team to a 6-3 win at Palm Beach Atlantic on Friday.
Cuda (3-0) went eight innings, struck out a career-high 13 batters and allowed only two runs (one earned), as Eckerd improved to 4-1 on the road this year.
It was the 436th career win for Eckerd head coach Bill Mathews, tying him with John Mayotte for the most in school history.
The Tritons (8-4) managed just seven hits but took advantage of seven PBA errors. Eckerd did most of its damage in the first two innings, jumping out to a 5-0 lead.
Stephen Pelc had two hits, while Dan Capra went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Bryant Gibson went 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
The offense was more than enough for Cuda, who lowered his earned run average to 1.38. He has surrendered just six earned runs in 39 innings and has 44 strikeouts.
Logan Thomas (1-1) took the loss for the Sailfish (10-6), though he allowed just two earned runs over 5 2/3 innings.
Johnny Cole and Jorge Chavarria each had two hits for PBA.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
