ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Eckerd College junior right-hander Jake Wilder tossed a seven-inning complete game to help the Tritons salvage a doubleheader split against visiting Florida Memorial on Saturday.
Wilder gave up just three hits and struck out seven to lead Eckerd to a 5-1 victory in the second game. Florida Memorial recorded 19 hits in a 14-1 victory in the opener.
Wess Hollins went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored in Game Two and had four hits overall for the Tritons (6-3). David Regidor, Dan Capra and Bryant Gibson also had two hits in the nightcap.
Gibson and Hollins put together back-to-back RBI singles in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Eckerd added two more insurance runs in the sixth.
But the Tritons could manage just six hits in the opener, as FMU left-hander Frank Sigler (1-1) handcuffed the hosts for eight innings.
Sigler scattered six hits – all singles – and stuck out five. Erick Yglesias went 4-for-5 with two runs scored, and J.C. Gill went 4-for-5 with four RBIs for the Lions (2-8).
Josh Whittle hit a three-run home run in the third, part of a four-run inning that broke a 1-1 tie.
Eckerd will wrap up the weekend with a 1 p.m. contest against Concordia (N.Y.) on Sunday at the Turley Athletic Complex.
