Warner Sweeps Softball in Saturday Twinbill

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Haylee Padgett had four hits and tossed a complete game to lead visiting Warner (Fla.) to a doubleheader sweep of the Eckerd College softball team on Saturday at the Turley Athletic Complex.

Padgett allowed just one run in the circle to lead the Royals (4-0) to a 6-1 win in the first game before going 2-for-4 with a solo home run during an 11-0 victory in the finale.

Lindsay Martin went 5-for-7 with four runs scored and three RBIs. Rebecca Howell was credited with a complete-game shutout in the second game, hurling five innings and allowing just three hits.

Kirsten Cox went 2-for-4, and Kelly Coston had an RBI single for Eckerd (1-3).

Warner got the scoring going early in the opening game, plating two runs in the first inning to take a quick 2-0 lead. The Tritons cut it to 2-1 in the second when Coston singled up the middle to score Kristen Schurr.

But the Royals, who have won three straight NAIA Sun Conference regular season championships, scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to break it open.

Warner scored four runs in the first inning of the second game and added six more in the fourth. The Royals had 12 hits and took advantage of four Eckerd errors.

The Tritons will play Palm Beach Atlantic at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at the Turley Athletic Complex. The teams will continue its doubleheader from Feb. 5 that was halted due to rain. The first game was suspended in the bottom of the second inning.
