Baseball Rallies to Top Ave Maria

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College baseball team scored three runs in its final two at-bats to take a 4-3 come-from-behind win over visiting Ave Maria on Friday evening.

Catcher Aaron Shapiro broke a 3-3 tie with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth, as Eckerd (3-1) won for the third time in its first four outings.

Second baseman Stephen Pelc went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, and David Regidor added an RBI single for the Tritons.

Right-hander Jake Wilder (1-0) pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win. The junior gave up just two hits and struck out five.

Starter Alex Menendez went 5 1/3 innings and surrendered just two hits.

Nick Keuler (0-1) picked up the loss for AMU (5-4). Gabe Loweree had two of AMU's four hits and drove in a run.

AMU held a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh before Eckerd tallied two runs thanks to an error and Regidor's RBI single to tie it at 3-3.

Joey LaRose hit a one-out double in the bottom of the eighth to get into scoring position, and Shapiro brought him home with a line drive down the right-field line.

Eckerd will return to action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Saint Leo.
