Softball Falls to Barry in SSC Series Opener, 9-5

Box Score

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd softball team took a hard loss Saturday night as they fell to the Barry Buccaneers, 9-5, at the Turley Athletic Complex on the campus of Eckerd College.  Barry improves to 20-12 overall and 2-2 in the Sunshine State Conference, while the Tritons are now 9-17-1 and 1-3 in the SSC.

Barry went on the board first, as they plated two runners in the top of the second inning.  They added one more the following inning, scoring on a suicide squeeze play to make the score 3-0.  Eckerd quickly tied the score up later on that inning.  Kristen Schurr had a base hit up the middle, which brought home Eckerd's first run of the game.  With runners on first and third, Schurr stole second base, which distracted the Barry defense and brought home Alex Sasso to make it a one run game.  Emily Wiemken brought Schurr home on her base hit to left-center to tie the game up, 3-3.

Barry scored their fourth run of the game the following inning.  Eckerd matched that, and one later on that inning.  After Barry's starting pitcher Paula Mackin had bases loaded due to walks, a pitching change was made.  Schurr connected with a two-run single against the new pitcher, to bring the Tritons up, 5-3.

Barry was able to add on three more runs in the top of the fifth inning, using their speed and bunting skills to move the runners around.  Eckerd left runners on the base for the remainder of the game, going scoreless that last three innings.  Barry capped of the seventh inning with one more run, making the final score 9-5.

Mackenzie Dawson suffered the loss on the night, pitching seven innings while giving up 13 hits, nine runs (which four of those were earned), one walk, and struck out three batters.  Schurr, Sasso, and Sarah Agnew all had two hits each for Eckerd.  Schurr picked up three runs batted in during the contest.

Due to potential rain coming into the St. Petersburg area, the double-header for tomorrow is now pushed up to 9:00 am and 11:00 am.
