CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Eckerd Triton softball team participated in their annual Eckerd College Triton Spring Invitational that is held at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Florida. The Tritons dropped their first two games on Friday, February 19th. The first game was an 8-20 deficit against Drury University, and then dropped their second in a non Sunshine State Conference game against the University of Tampa, 0-3.
Both teams jumped out to a hot start, with the Panthers scoring four runs in the first, while the Tritons hit their way around the bases to score five. Drury was able to regain the lead in the second inning, capitalizing on a two out throwing error, which helped the Panthers score four more runs to make the score 8-5. The Panthers were able to score two more runs in the fourth inning.
The top of the sixth inning is when the game made a turn for the worst for Eckerd, as the Panthers scored 10 runs, taking advantage of the Eckerd errors that were made. The Tritons were only able to score two runs the rest of the game, which came in the bottom of the fifth inning. The final score of the game was 8-20.
In the second game of the tournament, the Tritons went scoreless in seven innings. The University of Tampa jumped on the board with their first run of the game during the second inning on a sacrifice fly to center field that brought the runner on third home. Their next two runs came in the fourth and fifth innings. Eckerd attempted a comeback in the sixth inning, when Alex Sasso hit a single to the second, which caused confusion for the UT player. At an attempt of trying to get Sasso out by the second baseman, the UT player threw the ball home after noticing Amanda Kolonick racing to the plate, making the out and leaving the Tritons scoreless.
Kolonick had a great night at the plate, going 4-for-7 with two runs, one RBI, and three stolen bases.
The two losses suffered by the Eckerd turns their overall record to 3-5. Their next games for the Eckerd Triton Spring Invitational will be tomorrow, February 20th, as they get ready to take on the University of West Florida at 1:30 pm and Valdosta State at 4:00 pm.
