Matt Heller went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in a losing effort as the Saint Leo Lions (2-3) defeated the Eckerd Tritons (5-2), 9-3, on Tuesday evening at the Turley Athletic Complex.
Saint Leo got the scoring started in the top of the third inning, scoring four runs, two of which came on a left field blast by Ryan Powers. Eckerd answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the third on a run-scoring single by
Matt Heller.
After the Lions scored one run in both the fourth and fifth innings, the Tritons made it 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by
Stephen Pelc. Unfortunately for the Tritons, the Lions would add three more runs in the sixth, putting the game out of reach.
Jake Wilder took the loss for Eckerd, going four complete innings and allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out four. SLU's Aaron Brandt earned the win, pitching six strong innings while allowing just two runs on seven hits.
Eckerd will return to the diamond Thursday, February 18 as it hosts Clearwater Christian at 7pm.
