St. Petersburg, Fla. - The Eckerd softball team dealt with their second split double-header of the season, defeating Warner University 10-7 the first game and dropping the second game, 4-2 at the Turley Athletic Complex in St. Petersburg, Florida on Saturday, February 13th.
The Royals jumped on the board first, scoring four runs in the second inning. Eckerd climbed their way back, after Kristen Schurr's two-run blast over the left-center field fence in the bottom of the second inning and the Tritons capitalizing on Warner's pitching to score three runs in the bottom of the third, making it a tied game at 5-5.
The Tritons continued to score runs in the last two innings of the game, scoring three in the fifth and two in the sixth, taking advantage of errors made by the Royals. Warner attempted to make a comeback in the seventh inning, scoring one run, but it wasn't enough to win the game, with the final score 10-7, and a Triton win.
Mackenzie Dawson earned the win for Eckerd, while Warner's Samantha Swafford was thrown into a 5-5 tied game in the fourth inning, taking the loss. Dawson pitched seven innings, while allowing seven hits, striking out one batter, and walking three.
Kristen Torres, Amelia Czelatka, Emily Wiemken, and Alex Sasso all had hot bats during the game. The four were responsible for nine of the 13 hits the Tritons had. Torres went 3-for-3 with three runs and one RBI. Wiemken went 2-for-3 with three RBI's, while Sasso went 2-for-4 and Czelatka went two-for-three.
As for game two of the double-header, the Tritons scored first, after Amanda Kolonick scored on Sasso's single. Warner soon answered back, scoring two runs in the top of the second inning.
Neither team scored any runs till the top of the sixth inning, when Warner's Franki Grimes hit a two-run bomb over the right-center field fence, bringing the score to 4-1. Eckerd made an attempt to come back after Kirsten Cox hit a triple and was brought home by Kolonick, but that was the only run that came across the plate for the Tritons, making the final score 2-4, Warner's victory.
Alex Koronkiewicz took the loss for Eckerd, with her record dropping to 1-1. She pitched six innings, giving up eight hits, one walk, and striking our four batters. Kolonick, Sasso, Wiemken, and Cox each had two hits in the contest.
Eckerd's record is now 2-2. They'll be back in action on Wednesday, February 17th, as they play host to Webber International University in double-header action. Game time is set for 4 pm.
