ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Sophomore guard
Taylor Young led all scorers with 23 points while
Ashley Lutz added 20 points and four assists to lead the Eckerd Tritons (4-3) past the Flagler Saints (5-3), 84-64, on Saturday evening at the McArthur Center.
In the first stanza, Eckerd started quickly as it jumped out to a 15-6 lead after a layup by
Tijana Brdar and then a 22-11 lead after a three ball by Young with 11:06 to go in the half. After a jumper by Flagler's Jen Mitchell made it 22-17 with 7:38, a layup by Lutz sparked the Tritons on a 17-2 run, capped by another three by
Stephanie Grace, to push Eckerd's lead to 39-19 with 3:02 to go.
A pair of free throws by Mitchell before a buzzer-beating layup by Young helped trim the Tritons' lead to 43-28 going into halftime.
In the second half, a trio of layups by Lutz helped push the Tritons' lead to 51-30. From that point on, the Saints never got any closer than 10 points as Eckerd coasted to the 20-point win, made complete by a three-pointer by
Kati Rausberg with 21 seconds left.
For the game, Brdar helped the Tritons' cause with 18 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two blocks. Rausberg led Eckerd with seven boards, six assists, and four steals. Mitchell led Flagler with 22 points.
Eckerd will return to the hardwood on Friday, December 18 as it hosts Palm Beach Atlantic at 6pm.
