ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Eckerd men's golf team turned in a record-setting performance at the Jay Jennison Cup on Monday and Tuesday, finishing fourth as a team while establishing new program marks for both a single round and a 54-hole tournament at the World Golf Village's Slammer and Squire Course.
The Tritons carded rounds of 281, 287, and 278 to finish at 846, 18-under par, placing fourth in the 12-team field. Eckerd's 846 shattered the previous program 54-hole record of 855, set last season at the same tournament, by nine strokes. The Tritons' final-round 278 also broke the program's single-round record of 279, which had stood since the 2004 Nova Southeastern Fall Collegiate.
Huey Cunningham provided an early highlight, firing a 7-under 65 in Monday's opening round to sit atop the individual leaderboard. Cunningham followed with rounds of 74 and 70 to finish tied for 10th at 7-under 209.
Simon Germain joined Cunningham in a tie for 10th. After an opening-round 74, Germain surged with a 5-under 67 in the second round before closing with a 4-under 68, also finishing at 209.
Henry Wigg gave Eckerd a third finisher inside the top 16, tying for 16th at 5-under 211. Wigg posted rounds of 72, 71, and 68, saving his best round of the tournament for Tuesday's finale.
Tyler Van Dusen tied for 33rd at 1-over 217, shooting 70, 75, and 72, while Jayson Ross rounded out the lineup in a tie for 61st at 12-over 228.
Eckerd's closing 278 helped the Tritons finish just five strokes behind third-place Embry-Riddle and six behind runner-up Lynn.
The team will be back in action Sept. 28-29 for the Regional Preview in Dade City.
