CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Eckerd Tritons sailing team competed at Mendelblatt Open Team Race over the weekend, finishing in second place out of 10 teams. It is the second straight regatta the Tritons have boasted a second-place standing.
On day one, the Tritons set out in boats 7-9 for their first two races of the day. In boat seven was
Paul Rodrigues Jr. and
Avery Guck, boat eight was
Peter Miller and
Peyton Elizabeth Seidle, and boat nine was
Jordan Vieira and
Tia Soultanakis. In the first race against Florida State, Eckerd won in a 2-3-4 combination in 420s. The following race Eckerd stayed in 420, and all three boats were against North Carolina State. Eckerd won in a 1-2-3 combination.
Eckerd then switched into FJs 4-6 against South Florida, winning in a 1-2-5 combination. The Tritons then defeated Palm Beach Atlantic and Rollins before suffering their first losses of the day vs. Jacksonville and College of Charleston. Eckerd stayed in FJs for the final race of the round robin, defeating Clemson in a 1-2-5 combination.
Eckerd sat tied for second with Jacksonville heading into the top four races with a record of 7-2. The Tritons took down the Dolphins in a close, high-action race, and then fell to College of Charleston. Eckerd closed the day with a win over Rollins.
After a long day of steady winds, Eckerd ended in second place with a 9-3 record. The Tritons got to travel home early due to all the racing being completed on Saturday.
Next up for the Tritons, the team will compete at the Szambecki Open Team Race on March 21-22 at Old Dominion University.
