Women's cross country concludes opening race in Lakeland

LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Eckerd Tritons women's cross country program competed in its first race since 2004 Friday morning at the Swan City Classic hosted by Southeastern. The team came in ninth place, just 14 points behind conference foe Saint Leo.

Abigail Davidson led the group of Tritons in the 4k with a top-75 finish and a time of 17:06.2. Summer Sorensen was close behind in 87th after clocking 18:17.9, and Hannah Workman was three spots back in 90th with a mark of 18.34.4. Tatum Thursby and Evelyn Davis each snuck inside the top 100 with sub-20 minute times.

This marks the first race for the men's cross country program in 14 years. Started in 1984, the program achieved remarkable success during its run—capturing three Sunshine State Conference (SSC) team championships in 1990, 1991, and 1992, as well as two individual titles. The program also made three NCAA Championship appearances, highlighted by the historic performance of Kim Fagen, Eckerd's first female All-American. Fagen won the NCAA South Region Title and placed 24th at the NCAA Championship in 1991.

The team will be back in action next weekend for the HOKA Nights of Thunder meet in Tallahassee, Fla.
