KINGS POINT, N.Y. -- The Eckerd sailing team competed at a jam-packed regatta over the weekend at the Nevins Trophy in New York, finishing in 10th place out of 17 teams.
On Saturday, the Tritons set sail and waited in the rain for the wind to fill in. After three races in A and two in B, competitors were sent in for a wind hold, with Eckerd in third overall at this point. When the wind filled in, conditions were inconsistent, with winds ranging from 3-12 knots. At the end of six races in each division, the Tritons finished in 10th with 107 points. Halfway through Saturday's action, it was announced that Sunday would be canceled due to the Nor'easter that was forecasted to bring 40-60 knot gusts into the area. The race committee decided it would be safer to send all the sailors home early.Â
For Eckerd, Division A was
Jordan Vieira and
Tia Soultankakis, and Division B was
Paul Rodrigues Jr. and
Avery Guck. The A squad placed 10th with 59 points, and B placed 7th with 48 points. Vieira and Soultankakis had a pair of top-five finishes on Saturday, earning a day-best placement of fourth in race two. Guck and Rodrigues saw their best result in fifth in both the second and final race.Â
Up next for the Tritons, the team will compete at The Atlantic Coast Tournament at St. Mary's on October 18-19, and the Lake Virginia Invitational at Rollins on Oct. 18-19 as well.
