WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Eckerd beach volleyball team pulled off its first sweep of the season, opening with a 5-0 win over Barry before falling to Spring Hill (Ala.) 0-5 to split the day in West Palm Beach on Friday afternoon.
Eckerd (3-13) opened the day on a 5-0 sweep over Barry (1-13).
Madison Hardbarger and Anna Jupin took the Buccaneers' top flight of Fiona Baker and Biancaliz Cruz to three sets. After taking the first set 22-20, Baker and Cruz took set two 21-18 to force a third set. It was a close rally on the top court, but Hardbarger and Jupin grinded out a 16-14 victory in the top spot.
Melanie Silva and Addie White made quick work of their opponents in the two's flight, taking the match 21-6, 21-11.
The three's and five's matches were both close, with Eckerd picking up straight sets victories in both flights. Jocelyn Escoffery and Bekah Overly took the No. 3 spot 21-17, 21-12, while Rachel Jackson and Teagan VanderMey took the No. 5 spot 21-16 in straight sets. Mariana Olivares-Cely and Brooke Hand won the No. 4 position by forfeit.
Spring Hill (11-10) topped the Tritons, 5-0, in the second match of the day.
Eckerd dropped all five matches to Spring Hill in straight sets.
Eckerd remains in West Palm Beach tomorrow to face Tusculum (Tenn.) and Palm Beach Atlantic with first serves at 8:00 AM.
