Alcantara Sixth After Opening Day of NCAA Championship Finals

EUREKA, Mo. - Amelie Alcantara impressed in the opening round of the NCAA Championship with a 1-under 71 at the Fox Run Golf Course on Tuesday.

Alcantara had a hot start to the day. After a par on the opening hole, she added two straight birdies on holes No. 2 and 3, nearly carding an ace on the second hole with her tee shot landing just a foot from the pin. She almost posted an eagle on No. 3 as her second stroke on the fairway fell inches from the pin.

Alcantra bogeyed hole No. 4 but continued her strong play with four straight pars. However, she double-bogeyed No. 9 to make the turn at 1-over.

Alcantara carded pars No. 10 and 12 and bogeyed No. 13 to sit 2-over. She rallied with three straight birdies on holes No. 13-15 to vault back up the leaderboard.

After a boggy on No. 16, Alcantara ended the round strong with a par on No. 17 before knocking in a 15-foot putt for birdie on the final hole.

She played the par-3s well with a 2.50 stroke average on the holes, ranking tied for second in the field. She averaged a 4.75 on par-5s.

Alcantara's six birdies tied for second most in the 98-person field.

She sits three strokes off the round one leader, Olivia Gronborg of Nova Southeastern.

Alcantara tees off at 1:10 (CT) on Wednesday for round two. Follow scoring live
