EUREKA, Mo. - Amelie Alcantara impressed in the opening round of the NCAA Championship with a 1-under 71 at the Fox Run Golf Course on Tuesday.
Alcantara had a hot start to the day. After a par on the opening hole, she added two straight birdies on holes No. 2 and 3, nearly carding an ace on the second hole with her tee shot landing just a foot from the pin. She almost posted an eagle on No. 3 as her second stroke on the fairway fell inches from the pin.
Alcantra bogeyed hole No. 4 but continued her strong play with four straight pars. However, she double-bogeyed No. 9 to make the turn at 1-over.
Alcantara carded pars No. 10 and 12 and bogeyed No. 13 to sit 2-over. She rallied with three straight birdies on holes No. 13-15 to vault back up the leaderboard.
After a boggy on No. 16, Alcantara ended the round strong with a par on No. 17 before knocking in a 15-foot putt for birdie on the final hole.
She played the par-3s well with a 2.50 stroke average on the holes, ranking tied for second in the field. She averaged a 4.75 on par-5s.
Alcantara's six birdies tied for second most in the 98-person field.
She sits three strokes off the round one leader, Olivia Gronborg of Nova Southeastern.
