Tritons Compete at SAISA Open Championships

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd open sailing team competed at the SAISA Open Team and Fleet Race Championships at the Doyle Sailing Center over the weekend, placing sixth in both events. 

On Friday and Saturday, Eckerd finished sixth in the Team Race Championships with a 4-8 record. Eden Nykamp, Griffin Richardson, and Mathew Monts were the team's skippers, with Elissa Martinez, Tess Levanaway, Amelia Johnson, and Brooks Jordan as crew. 

In the opening round, the Tritons topped Florida State, North Carolina State, and The Citadel to advance to the top-six.   In the second round, Eckerd went 1-4 with a victory over Jacksonville. 

Miami won the SAISA Team Race Championships with a 12-3 record. 

Eckerd finished sixth in the fleet race championships on Saturday and Sunday with 106 points. 

Nykamp and Martinez comprised the A Division, finishing sixth with 56 points. After a tough start in the opening race, Eckerd had four straight top-five placings in races No. 2-5, with a victory in race five and a second-place finish in race four.   

Monts skippered the B Division with Johnson (1-6) and Jordan (7-8) as crew, placing sixth with 50 points. They posted three top-five finishes, with a win in race seven and a second-place finish in race three. 

NC State won the fleet race championship with 52 points. 

Eckerd returns to action next weekend at three events the SAISA Women's Team Race and Fleet Race Championships in Charleston, SC, and the Azalea Bowl in Wilmington, NC.
