ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Eckerd Athletics is proud to announce three individuals - Felecia Felton, Elmar Koenig, and Randy Kwist - and the 2002-03 Elite Eight men's basketball team, who have been selected to the 2023 Athletics Hall of Fame class.
Felecia Felton was a forward on the women's basketball team from 1998-2002. She owns three career program records: points with 1,758, points per game at 16.4, and field goals made with 652.Â
In addition to her top spots, she ranks in the top 20 in six other career records: second in steals (229), second in free throws made (359), eighth in rebounds (546), ninth in blocks (86), 13th in 3-pointers made (95), and 17th in assists (193).Â
Felton has four 30-plus point games in her career, the most by any player in program history.Â
Following her senior year, Felton was tabbed an All-American, the first in program history, earning a spot on the D2 Bulletin Fourth Team. That season, she was also selected to the Daktronics All-South Region First team and the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year. She was also the first SSC Player of the Year in program history. She scored 513 in her final year, ranking second in single-season records.Â
She garnered SSC honors her first three seasons as well, with selections to the All-Freshman team in 1998-99, the first team in 1999-2000, and second team accolades in 2000-01. Â
Elmar Koenig played men's tennis from 2005-07, leading the Tritons to two National Tournament appearances in 2005 and 2006.Â
As a sophomore, Koenig was a two-time All-American, earning a spot on the ITA Singles and Doubles teams. He posted a 17-1 regular-season singles record and a 12-5 regular-season doubles record. He is the only player in program history to earn both singles and doubles All-American honors. He finished the season ranked No. 19 as a singles player and No. 4 in doubles while the team ranked No. 8.Â
Koenig was a five-time All-SSC selection. As a freshman in 2005, he posted a 14-3 regular-season doubles record with partner Javier Romero, earning second-team honors. He compiled an 11-3 record in singles and received honorable mention accolades. In 2006, he earned first-team honors in both singles and doubles. In 2007, he was tabbed to the second team for singles players with a 5-2 regular-season record.Â
Randy Kwist was a third baseman for the Tritons from 1976-79 and a three-year member of the men's soccer program. During his time at Eckerd, he helped lead baseball to four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, including finishing as the National Runner-Up in 1977.Â
He was tabbed a First Team ABCA All-American his senior year in 1979 after posting a .298 batting average with 53 hits, 16 doubles, two triples, six homeruns, and 46 RBIs. His doubles that season rank ninth in single-season records.Â
In 1978, Eckerd won the program's first Sunshine State Conference Championship. He posted 57 RBIs that year, ranking eighth in single-season records. In the spring, he was drafted in the 12th round of the MLB draft by the Yankees.Â
Over his four years on the diamond, he played in 173 games with 205 hits and 152 RBIs. He ranks in the top-10 in Eckerd career records in seven categories, including; fifth in RBIs (152), sixth in at-bats (643), seventh in total bases (313), ninth in doubles (39), 10th in hits (205), 10th in singles (141), and 10th in extra-base hits (64).Â
He spent one season in the minor leagues playing in Low A in 1979.Â
The 2002-03 men's basketball team was one of the most successful teams in Eckerd Athletics history.Â
Eckerd won the NCAA South Regional Championship with an 85-75 victory over Henderson State and advanced to the Elite Eight. The Elite Eight appearance is the furthest NCAA appearance by men's basketball in program history and the second furthest NCAA appearance in all of Eckerd Athletics. Â
The team finished the season 25-7, setting a then-record for wins in a season and making the program's fifth appearance on the national stage.Â
Eckerd opened the season with an eight-game win streak, and the team finished the season ranking 21st in the nation in scoring margin, 26th in rebound margin, 37th in scoring defense, and 38th in field goal percentage.
