ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Eckerd alumnus
Garrett Hiott '19 could not ask for much more from his first year of professional baseball.
Hiott, who was one of four Tritons drafted in June (his turn coming in the 25th round with the Tampa Bay Rays), was selected to the New York-Penn League All-Star team on Thursday. Â He has spent his first season in the minor leagues with the Hudson Valley Renegades in Class A Short Season, where he quickly became the team's everyday centerfielder and lead-off hitter.
Through August 14, Hiott was batting .273 with a .374 on-base percentage, ranking 11th in the league. He also ranks third in the league in stolen bases with 18 and has only been caught four times. Defensively, he has already tallied five assists from the outfield.
Hiott was one of six Renegades who were part of the NYP Red team including the Rays' first-round draft pick and No. 9 overall prospect, Greg Jones.
The NYP All-Star Game takes place on Wednesday, August 21, in Staten Island, New York, at 7:00 PM. The game will feature several highly-touted prospects such as George Valera (Cleveland's No. 6), Bryson Stott (Phillies' No. 3), and Gilberto Jimenez (Red Sox's No. 8).
Hiott isn't the only Triton having success at the next level.
Nick Conti was promoted from the GCL Mets to the Class A Columbia Fireflies on Wednesday.
Mitch Calandra has held his own as part of a three-catcher rotation with the Class A Short Season Danville Braves, hitting .277 while throwing out nearly 30 percent of base-stealers. And the Orioles remain high on
Dillon McCollough, who is 1-2 with a 3.48 ERA Â in eight appearance in the Gulf Coast League.
