Tritons Rally Late, Foiled By Darkness in Split at Lynn

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Eckerd baseball team saw a lead slip away only to take it back with a vengeance in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader at Lynn, but later saw a late lead in the finale erased due to stoppage of play as the Fighting Knights salvaged the last game of the series a fashion unfortunate for the Tritons.

In the first game, Lynn scored six runs in the seventh to tie the game at 6-6 only for Eckerd to put six on the board in the top of the eighth.

The Tritons were in the midst of a similar offensive outburst in the finale with seven runs across in the top of the eighth and one out, taking a 9-7 lead. However, the game was called on account of darkness before the inning was completed, thereby erasing Eckerd's rally.

KEY MOMENTS
Game 1
  • Santos Grande launched a two-run homerun to right field in the second inning, giving Eckerd a 2-0 lead.  One inning later, Chase Achuff delivered a two-out RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0.
  • Eckerd plated three more runs in the top of the seventh on a Keith Leavitt, Jr., double and sacrifice flies by both Nick Conto and Garrett Hiott. Meanwhile, Robin Allen tossed six shutout innings while allowing only three hits along the way.
  • The Fighting Knights exploded for six runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game fueled by six straight singles before Joey Favetta coaxed a double-play grounder to end the inning.
  • After singles by Achuff and Nick Arrivo, Justin Glover gave Eckerd the lead once more via a three-run homerun.  The Tritons tacked on three more runs with two outs on another Hiott sacrifice fly and a two-run single by Mitch Calandra.
  • Favetta allowed a run in the eighth but Lynn never truly threatened in the last two innings.
Game 2
  • Lynn scored four runs in the second inning despite getting only one hit, instead taking advantage of two errors, two walks, and a wild pitch.
  • The Fighting Knights added another run in the fourth for a 5-0 lead before Eckerd got on the board in the top of the fifth on Hiott's third sacrifice fly of the day.
  • The Tritons cut the deficit to 5-2 on Jake Romine's two-out RBI single in the sixth but Lynn led off the bottom of the inning with a solo homerun, then added another run in the seventh.
  • Six hits and four Lynn errors in the top of the eighth turned into seven runs for Eckerd with only one out in the inning. However, the game was called due to darkness before the inning was completed, taking away the huge inning.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • The stoppage of play in the finale cost Eckerd the chance to sweep a series from Lynn for the first time since 1999.
  • Conti, Calandra, Achuff, and Grande all had two hits in the opening game. Glover's homerun was his first of the season.
  • Calandra moved into fifth all-time in Eckerd program history in base hits.
