ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Triton women's tennis team put together a quality all-around performance on Saturday, knocking off visiting West Chester (Pa.) at the Bullard Courts on senior day.
The Tritons (2-6) set the tone in doubles play, taking all three positions from the Golden Rams.
Taylor Selby and
Joyce Fields earned the first point at No. 1 doubles with an 8-3 win. Â
Bailey Koronich and
MaryAnn Aaron picked up another with an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles, and seniors
Laurence Bourgault and
Isabella Wong gave EC a 3-0 advantage following an 8-6 victory in the No. 3 position.
West Chester (2-2) avoided a sweep with a pair of singles wins, but Eckerd got its two necessary points early to seal the match.
Cassidy Lear made quick work of Sofia Von Der Heyde at No. 6 singles, 6-1 and 6-0, and Bourgault won a tight contest against Julia Mowrey at No. 5 singles, 7-5 and 7-6 (7-3).
Fields and Aaron also won their singles contests in straight sets. At the No. 2 position, Fields took down Leandra Roelker, 6-1 and 6-2; Aaron was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Shannon Nixon.
Selby nearly added another win in the No. 1 position after splitting the first two sets with Rylee Power but dropped a hotly-contested 11-9 tiebreaker.
"The ladies had a great match," said EC head coach
Ben Maxwell. Â "We lost 9-0 to this team last year so to come out and win 7-2 today was really awesome. Â I'm very pleased with our play, and it was especially nice to get a win on senior day."
The careers of seniors Bourgault and Wong continue through April, but the two were honored by Maxwell and the team before the match began.
The Tritons return to the court on Tuesday, March 15, hosting Saint Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.) at 2:00 PM.
