TRITONS THIS WEEK: What's Coming On February 12-18

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Eckerd athletics has a busy week with basketball, baseball, softball, and tennis continuing action all in conference action while golf and sailing begin their respective spring seasons.

MEN'S GOLF
Monday/Tuesday: Matlock Collegiate Classic | Lone Palm Country Club | Lakeland, Fla. | Live Scoring
  • Eckerd begins its spring schedule this week traveling to Lakeland, Florida, for the Matlock Classic. The Tritons look for leadership and low scores from Nick Mitchell, Justin Ayanian, and Felix Bolivar as they begin their season.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Tuesday: vs Tampa | 3:00 PM | Bullard Courts
  • The Tritons (0-2, 0-2 SSC) opened the season last week with two matches falling in both hard-fought contests. They will play one match this week hosting Tampa (1-0) on Tuesday. Freshman Taylor Selby and Cassidy Lear played two strong matches last week for Eckerd against tough competition.

  • Eckerd (17-6, 11-5 SSC) enters the week following a blowout win over Nova Southeastern on Saturday. Eckerd will face tough competition in the penultimate week of the regular season, traveling to Embry-Riddle on Wednesday and to Rollins on Saturday.
  • Eckerd is led on both ends of the floor by Kacie Juday and Zoe Richards. Juday averages 12.2 points per game while Richards averages 12.0 per game. Juday has scored in double digits in four of the last five games. Richards has scored in double figures in the last eight games and has scored 20 or more points three times during that stretch.
  • The Eckerd defense is third in the conference in scoring defense holding opponents to just 59 points a game. The Tritons held Nova Southeastern to 20 points below its season average on Saturday. Juday averages 8.4 rebounds per game while Richards averages 4.8 per contests. Juday has also grabbed nine steals over the past two games while Abby Whiteye has grabbed five in the past two games.
  • Embry-Riddle (18-5, 12-4 SSC) enters the matchup with two wins last week over Barry and Lynn. The Eagles are led by three players averaging double-digits: Tara Fields (15.7 ppg), Sabrina Whiting (11.7), and Nicole Tucker (10.7). Fields is the fifth-leading scorer in the conference who also averages 5.0 rebounds per game.
  • Rollins (12-11, 7-10 SSC) enters the week off a loss to Florida Southern and a win over Palm Beach Atlantic. Rollins will play Nova Southeastern before facing Eckerd. The Tars are led by Julia Ingler averaging 13.4 points per game. Vernisha Andrews and Carly McLendon lead the team on the boards average 8.3  and 8.0 rebounds per game respectively. McLendon also averages 2.8 blocks per game leading the conference.
  • Earlier this season, Eckerd narrowly lost to Embry-Riddle, 59-55. Eckerd built a large first-half lead in the loss but the Eagles produced a second-half rally for the win. Eckerd beat Rollins, 75-74, in overtime as Richards led Eckerd with 26 points and two buzzer-beating shots.

  • Eckerd (17-6, 10-6 SSC) enters the week coming off a narrow loss to Nova Southeastern on Saturday. Eckerd looks to bounce back after the loss as they travel during the week to Embry-Riddle on Wednesday and Rollins on Saturday.
  • The Tritons are led on both ends of the floor by Drushaun McLaurn and Trevon Young. McLaurn averages 19.0 points per game while Young averages 16.9. McLaurn has scored in double-digits in 11 of the past 12 games while putting up 20-plus points in seven of those contests. Young has scored in double figures in 21 straight games while scoring 20-plus points in his last two games.
  • McLaurn has posted five double-doubles this season with three coming in the last five games. Young has posted 10 double-doubles this season while averaging 9.4 rebounds per game. Eckerd ranks ninth in the country in rebound margin with a plus-9.2 average.
  • Embry-Riddle (10-14, 4-12 SSC) enters the game on a three-game losing streak. The Eagles have five players averaging double-digits with Ognjen Miljkovic and Rudy Bibb-Boyd leading the way with 17.9 and 17.2 points per game respectively. Nashad Mackey leads the conference averaging 12.5 rebounds per game.
  • Rollins (14-11, 10-7 SSC) enters the week on a four-game losing streak and will face Nova Southeastern on Wednesday before hosting Eckerd on Saturday. The Tars have five players averaging double-digits with Sam Philpott and Jeff Merton leading the way with 18.7 and 15.6 points per game respectively.
  • Earlier this season, Eckerd beat Embry-Riddle 95-72 behind 23 points from McLaurn and 17 points from Young. Eckerd also beat Rollins, 95-81, building a large first-half lead behind 22 points from Young.

  • Eckerd (3-5) looks to bounce back after a 1-3 weekend as the Tritons open conference play hosting Embry-Riddle for a three-game series on Friday and Saturday.
  • Eckerd had big bats this weekend averaging seven hits a game and racking up 11 hits against No. 18 Valdosta State. The Tritons smacked four home runs over the four games with Meredith McGinnis and Crystal Garcia each hitting two. McGinnis's homers were the first two of her career while Garcia became the first player since 2015 to have a multi-home run game. Nikole Van Gennep has a five-game hitting streak while hitting .461 over the weekend.
  • Van Gennep was solid in the circle in two appearances over the weekend throwing a complete game win over West Georgia allowing just one run. Grace Willeck was also effective in relief, allowing only one run over 5.2 innings of work.
  • Embry-Riddle (3-2) enters the series off a 1-2 weekend at the South Region Crossover with a win over West Alabama. The Eagles have three players hitting over .300: B Limon (.571), Kailiah Rain (.375), and Destiny Carroll (.333). Ilona Andringa leads the Eagles in the circle with a 0.65 ERA over 21.2 innings pitched. 
BASEBALL

  • Eckerd (2-2) will host Claflin (S.C.) for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday. Eckerd will play the series after over a week and a half off after its series with Spring Hill (Ala.) was cancelled due to weather.
  • Eckerd has seen quality outings from its returning pitchers so far this year. Nick Alonzo (1-0) and Jack Iervolino combined for a two-hit shutout over seven innings on opening weekend. Dillon McCollough threw five strong innings allowing one earned run in a no-decision while Justin Carrillo (1-0) pitched 3.1 innings of relief without giving up a hit on opening weekend. Joey Favetta and Kevin Kane both had quality relief appearances as well at home. Kane threw two innings of hitless work while Favetta allowed just one hit in his two innings on the mound.
  • Four Tritons are hitting over .300: Sam Cochrane (.467), Keith Leavitt, Jr. (.333), Garrett Hiott (.308), and Bryan Torres (.308). Leavitt, Jr. leads the team in RBIs with four while Hiott and Mitch Calandra also have three RBIs apiece.
  • Claflin (1-6) enters the series with a series loss to Virginia State over the weekend. Darrell Langston leads the team hitting .360. Langston, Harold Smith, and Clyde Parker each have hit two homers as well.

  • After another strong fall season with 12 top-five finishes, Eckerd will open its spring schedule this weekend. The Triton coed team will host the SAISA Open while also traveling to South Carolina for the Charleston SCOR while the women's team will travel to Tampa for the USF Women's Regatta.
