Box Score MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - Nikole Van Gennep tossed a shutout and had a pair of hits in helping lead the Eckerd softball team to a 3-0 win over Barry University on Friday night to open a weekend conference series.
Van Gennep scattered seven hits over seven innings of work for her fourth shutout of the season.
The Tritons (15-26, 4-12 SSC) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning after Van Gennep doubled and
Carrie Shere drew a walk to set the table for
Dana Paul. Â Paul drove a two-strike pitch up the middle to bring in Van Gennep, and
Kiley King laid down a perfect squeeze bunt two batters later that scored Shere and gave Eckerd a 2-0 lead.
Barry (16-21, 8-11 SSC) threatened in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases with one out but Van Gennep escaped with a strikeout and a groundout to keep the Bucs off the board.
Eckerd added a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by
Chelsea Armstrong, although EC missed a chance to do more damage after loading the bases with no outs.
However, it didn't matter as Van Gennep (10-15) worked around a leadoff single in the bottom half of the inning and completed the shutout.
Paul, Van Gennep and
Kaleigh Floyd each had two hits in the win.
The series concludes with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 12:00 PM.
