Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Five Eckerd pitchers combined on a three-hitter as the Tritons entered a six-day layoff with a 4-2 win over Ave Maria (Fla.) on Wednesday night.
After the Gyrenes scored twice in the fourth, Eckerd (13-18) tied the game in the fifth and took the lead with two runs in the sixth while the bullpen took care of the rest.
The quartet of
Dillon McCollough,
Justin Carrillo,
Robin Allen and
Alex Moore didn't allow a hit over the final four innings. Â In all, the Triton pitching staff registered 12 strikeouts. Â Six of those came from
Joey Favetta, who worked four solid innings in his first career start.
Eckerd scored a run in the bottom of the first inning with
Sam Cochrane crossing home plate on a double play. Â However, AVU's Sergio Miyares held the Tritons at bay over the next four innings stranding two runners in both the third and fifth innings.
The Gyrenes got on the board with two runs in the fourth but Favetta struck out the final two batters of the frame to limit the damage.
Nick Conti tied the game in the fifth with a two-out single to score
Matthew Miller and one inning later, Miller delivered a two-out single to bring in the go-ahead run.
Later in the inning,
Chase Achuff scored on a wild pitch to give the Tritons a two-run lead.
McCollough (3-3) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief while Moore earned his first save with a scoreless ninth inning, stranding the tying run on base.
Eckerd tallied 10 hits with two each from Conti, Achuff and Miller. Â Conti's hit extended his streak of reaching base safely to 31 games while
Mitch Calandra pushed his hitting streak to eight.
The Tritons return to the field on April 5, visiting Webber International (Fla.) for a 6:00 PM first pitch.
