FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Eckerd beach volleyball team lost a pair of contests today at Florida Gulf Coast University by scores of 4-1 and 5-0.
Eckerd's (6-4) lone win of the day came in the first match, as
Madison Whiting and
Kaitlyn Sibson took a three-set victory in the No. 2 spot. The pair jumped out early taking the first set, 21-19, before dropping the second, 21-10. The team then battled to claim the third set, 15-11, for the win.
Eckerd put up a valiant effort across the board against a tough Florida Gulf Coast (3-0) team. In the first contest, the Tritons pushed their matches in both the No. 4 and 5 positions to decisive third sets. In the second contest, Eckerd again extended matches to three sets, this time in the No. 3 and 4 spots.
Playing in the No. 4 position,
Arielle Erillo and
Mackenzie Redner took their opening set, 21-19. The tandem dropped the second set, 21-5, before falling in a tight contest in the third set, 15-13.
Erillo and Redner played out of the No. 3 slot in the second match, again going to three sets. After narrowly dropping the first set, 21-19, the pair took the second set into extra points and pulled out a 27-25 win. However, they couldn't duplicate the result in the third set, falling 15-9.
In their first match at the No. 5 position,
Katie Arnette and
Margot Balliet dropped the first set, 21-15, but bounced back to claim a 21-16 win in the second set. The pair then pushed the third set to extra points, eventually falling 16-14.
In the second contest,
Abigail O'Ferrell and
Savanna Cary extended their match to three sets as well in the No. 4 spot. The pair lost the first set, 21-6, before taking the second set, 21-16. In the third set, the team battled but lost 15-8.
Eckerd will return to the sand Tuesday to host Lincoln Memorial University for a single game. The match is slated for a 5:30 start.
