Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Webber International (Fla.) hit four home runs and used a pair of big innings to defeat the Eckerd baseball team, 17-4, on Wednesday evening at the Turley Athletic Complex.
After both team's starters held their opponents scoreless over the first three innings, the Warriors (3-0) exploded for seven runs in the top of the fourth, using a pair of bases-loaded walks to get on the board before Sjaghbar Martis cleared the bases with a grand slam to cap the inning.
Webber extended its advantage to 9-0 in the fifth after a two-run triple by Cristian Rivera.
Eckerd (2-2) began to cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a solo home run by
Justin Glover to lead off the inning. Â The Tritons' next three batters reached to load the bases with no outs, but Webber's Max Boling escaped the jam with two strikeouts and a pop-up.
EC plated three more runs in the sixth on RBI singles by
Chase Achuff and
Tom Buonopane and an RBI groundout by
Jake Romine, but the Warriors extended the gap again in the eighth with six runs before adding two more in the ninth.
Meanwhile, a trio of Warriors pitchers held Eckerd hitless over the last three innings.Â
WIU only out-hit Eckerd by three, 14-11, but the Tritons issued 11 free passes and hit four batters.
Glover and Achuff both had three hits for Eckerd while Buonopane added two.
The Tritons used nine pitchers tonight with starter
Justin Carrillo (0-1) taking the loss after running into trouble in the fourth. Â
Nick Alonzo and
Joey Favetta each tossed an inning or more of scoreless relief.
Eckerd hits the road for the first time this season on Friday and Saturday, visiting Flagler (Fla.) College for a three-game series.
