ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd basketball teams can further solidify their positions in the Sunshine State Conference standings today as they travel to face Nova Southeastern in Fort Lauderdale.
Â
ABOUT THE SHARKS: Nova Southeastern is one of five teams that are part of a tight race in the top half of the conference standings. Â After moving into second place a week ago, the Sharks now find themselves in a tie for fourth with Tampa although NSU has played two more conference games than the Spartans. Â NSU fell in the standings due to back-to-back losses in its last two games, falling by four to both Florida Tech and Rollins. Â The Sharks will look to Christen Prasse (11.6 points per game) and Megan Piggott (11.3 points per game) to lead the offense as they try to keep pace in the SSC.
LAST TIME THEY MET: The Tritons built a 21-point lead in the second half and cruised to a 64-52 win over Nova in the McArthur Center on January 18. Â
Victoria Vine led all scorers with 22 points while
Ashley Folsom added 15 and
Kacie Juday recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Â Turnovers played a huge factor as Eckerd forced NSU into 23 miscues, converting those into 28 points.
CAREER NIGHT: Ashley Folsom scored a career-high 32 points on Wednesday night in a 65-58 win at Tampa. Â The total is tied for the third-most in a single game by a Triton in program history. Â It was also the most in a game by an EC player since Gabby Gattuso set the program record with 40 points in 2007.
Â
ABOUT THE SHARKS: It's been a rough road this season for Nova Southeastern, particularly since the calendar flipped to 2017. Â The Sharks enter today's game having lost seven straight games and are 1-9 since January 1. Â Four of those losses, however, have come by five points or fewer. Â Harrison Goodrick, who missed the previous meeting with Eckerd, is a force inside averaging 17.1 points per game. Â Dwayne Gibson and Troy Spears are both dangerous perimeter shooters.
LAST TIME THEY MET: Trevon Young's layup with four seconds left sealed an exciting finish as the Tritons held off NSU, 68-66, in the McArthur Center on January 18. Â The game was tightly-contested for most of the night with nine ties and nine lead changes. Â Young had 13 points while
Kevin Walsh had 17 to lead Eckerd. Â NSU's Gerald Tarin posted a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
RECORD BREAKER: With his first made 3-pointer today,
Kevin Walsh will become Eckerd's all-time leader for 3's made in a career. Â On Wednesday, Walsh tied the record of 220 held by Steve Berg (2002-06) and did it in only three seasons at Eckerd. Â He is also nearing the program's record for the most 3's in a season, entering today's contest with 83. Â Berg currently holds the single-season record with 94.
