ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Tritons men's tennis team was unable to dethrone the defending NAIA national champion Embry-Riddle as the ITA No. 6 Eagles defeated Eckerd, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon.
Eckerd (12-6) challenged the Eagles (10-2) in a series of matches, but the depth of ERAU squad proved victorious as the matches concluded.
The No. 2 doubles pair of
Eddie Lewis and
Frazier Springfield sought an upset over the 21
st-ranked doubles team in the nation in Fabian Zierleyn and Carlos Becke but were outlasted, 8-5. Springfield also fell in a hard-fought 8-5 matchup at fifth singles.
James McManus also gave Juan Ortiz Couder a fight at No. 4 singles in the first set before falling, 7-5.
The Tritons make a quick turnaround as they are visited by another defending national champion tomorrow morning when the No. 7 Barry Buccaneers visit the Bullard Courts. The reigning Division II champions will face off with the Tritons beginning at 10:00 AM.
