Embry-Riddle Escapes with Walk-Off Win over Tritons in Series Opener

Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Eckerd baseball team took a big lead into the late innings of the opening game of the weekend's series at Embry-Riddle, but the Eagles put together a pair of rallies to post a come-from-behind 13-12 win over the Tritons on Saturday evening.

Eckerd (9-16) took an 11-5 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Eagles scored six times to tie the game then got a walk-off sacrifice fly in the ninth to complete the comeback.

The Tritons jumped ahead early with a four-run first inning getting RBI singles from Lucas Luopa, Grant Banko and Carter Cashman.  Cashman later ripped a two-out, two-run double in the third to make it 6-3.

Embry-Riddle scored twice in the bottom of the third to get back within one, but Eckerd had another big inning in the top of the fourth with four runs.  After Garrett Hiott led off with a walk, Tom Buonopane brought him home with a triple to left-center.  Daniel Autiello later scored Buonopane with an RBI grounder, and Luopa and Banko followed with a pair of run-scoring hits to make it 10-5.

The lead grew to 11-5 in the fifth when Autiello was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.  Meanwhile, Jack Silberman held the ERAU bats in check in relief of starter Jack Mahan.

However, things changed in the eighth inning when the Eagles tied the game with six runs on six hits.

Buonopane put Eckerd back on top in the ninth with a two-out double, but Embry-Riddle pushed home the tying run in the bottom of the inning on an Enderson Velasquez RBI single and then got the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Camp.

The Tritons had 12 hits in the game, getting three from Luopa and Cashman and two from Buonopane and Banko.  Joey Favetta (0-2) took the loss with both runs in the ninth inning charged to him.

The series concludes tomorrow with a double-header beginning at 12:00 noon.
