Box Score 2 DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Eckerd baseball team salvaged a split on Sunday at Embry-Riddle, taking the final game of the series thanks to timely hitting.
The Eagles opened the day with a 13-1 win, but the Tritons avoided the sweep with a 10-3 win in the back end of the Sunday twinbill.
Eckerd (10-17) struck early in the finale, building a 7-1 lead after four innings.
Carter Cashman got things started with an RBI single in the first, and
Nick Conti followed with a two-run single in the third to make it 3-0. The Tritons padded their lead in the fourth inning after
Nick Hill cleared the bases with three-run double and
Mitchell Calandra brought him home with a single.
Meanwhile,
Dillon McCollough (3-2) put together a strong performance in the mound going seven innings and allowing only three runs. The freshman allowed only one run on five hits through six innings before running into a bit of trouble in the seventh, giving up two runs on a pair of hits and a walk.
Tom Buonopane, though, aided McCollough's cause with a solo home run in the eighth and a two-out, two-run single in the ninth.
Kevin Kane tossed two scoreless innings in relief to close out the game.
Eckerd pounded 16 hits in the finale, getting three from Calandra and
Garrett Hiott and two each from Buonopane, Hill and Cashman.
In the day's opener,
Alex Moore (1-3) retired the first 10 batters of the game and faced the minimum through four innings before Embry-Riddle pushed two runs across in the fifth. The Eagles later repeated their eighth-inning performance from Saturday, scoring six runs to build a large lead.
ERAU's Kenny Burkhead, meanwhile, kept the Triton hitters in check as he went the distance allowing only five hits. Calandra broke up the shutout bid in the seventh with an RBI single to score Conti.
The Tritons now return to the Turley Athletic Complex for an nine-game home stand that starts on Wednesday when Webber International (Fla.) visits St. Petersburg. Eckerd won the first meeting between the schools this season on February 3 by the score of 10-3.
