Box Score FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - One rough inning turned out to be the difference in Eckerd baseball's opener in a weekend series with Nova Southeastern on Friday.
The Sharks used an 11-run seventh inning to turn a tight game into a comfortable win, taking game one by the final score of 19-6.
Eckerd pulled back within striking distance in the top of that inning, scoring four times to cut the NSU lead to 7-6 thanks to RBI singles from
Carter Cashman,
Rowdy Andrews,
Zach Mitsmenn and
Matt MacMahon. The Tritons had a chance to do further damage with the bases loaded and one out, but Nova's Devin Rafterty struck out the final two hitters to strand three.
NSU then blew the game open in the bottom of the seventh, getting a two-run homerun from Daniel Zardon after a leadoff walk and things ballooned from there. The Sharks had nine hits in the inning and capped it off with another homerun, a three-run shot by Kevin Suarez.
The Tritons (6-5, 1-3 SSC) got on the board in the top of the first inning when
Lucas Luopa scored on an error by NSU shortstop Dylan Woods. Nova, however, answered with two runs in the second and four in the third to take a 6-1 lead.
Eckerd added a sacrifice fly from
Daniel Autiello in the fourth and held NSU scoreless until the sixth after a pair of two-out hits made the score 7-2. EC then pulled back within a run in the top of the seventh before the Sharks came up with their big inning.
The Tritons had 12 hits in the game, lead by Cashman's 3-for-5 performance at the plate. Hill and Andrews both had two hits.
Jack Silberman (0-3) took the loss, working 4-1/3 innings and allowing six runs on nine hits while fanning three.
The series concludes tomorrow with a double-header beginning at 1:00 PM.
