Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd softball team had to wait an extra day to complete a three-game sweep of Nova Southeastern, finishing Saturday's delayed game on Sunday with a 6-0 victory.
Eckerd (18-11-1, 5-4 SSC) began Sunday with a 5-0 lead but also in a jam as Nova Southeastern had loaded the bases with two outs against
Grace Willeck in the top of the third on Saturday.
Nikole Van Gennep took over in the circle and got out of the inning with no harm done.
Willeck (1-0) took care of the rest, returning to the circle in the fourth inning and holding the Sharks scoreless for the rest of the game to earn her first career win. She went 6-2/3 innings in the victory, allowing four hits and striking out five.
The Tritons built their lead on Saturday, scoring five runs in the first inning off of NSU starter Daija Jones. Eckerd had five hits in the inning and also benefited from a pair of Shark errors.
Carrie Shere again delivered a big hit, smashing a two-run home run (5) to give EC an early 3-0 lead.
Kiley King also had an RBI single in the inning, and the Tritons scored two more times as the result of errors.
Kaycie Duncan added another run in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out solo home run, her first of the season.
Van Gennep led Eckerd at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance while Shere, Duncan, King,
Chelsea Armstrong and
Kaleigh Floyd each had one hit.
The shutout was the fourth for EC in the last six games.
The Tritons return to the field on Tuesday, hosting Merrimack (Mass.) College in a double-header beginning at 4:00 PM.
