Box Score 2 MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - A clutch pitching performance in relief by
Jack Mahan helped the Eckerd baseball team salvage a split with Barry University in a Saturday double-header to wrap up the conference-opening series this weekend.
Mahan tossed 2-2/3 innings of scoreless relief in the nightcap as Eckerd (4-4, 1-2) came back from a 3-1 deficit to earn a 4-3 win.
Barry took the first game of the day, 6-0, behind a stellar pitching performance from Luis Deville.
In game two, the Tritons tied things up in the sixth by manufacturing a pair of runs, then took the lead for good in the eighth when a double-steal by
Nick Conti and
Rowdy Andrews resulted in an error on the throw to third allowing Andrews to score the go-ahead run.
That was all Mahan needed as he worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the eighth by getting a strikeout and fly out to end the inning. He then retired the side in the ninth to earn the win in relief.
Eckerd got a solid start from freshman
Dillon McCollough who struck out nine over five innings while giving up three runs, although two were unearned after a two-out error in the fifth.
Tom Buonopane's RBI double in the top of the fifth tied the game at 1-1 before the Bucs retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Buonopane, Andrews and
Daniel Autiello each had two hits in the nightcap while Conti,
Nick Hill and
Grant Banko each had one.
The Bucs took the opener as Deville held Eckerd hitless for 6-2/3 innings before Andrews broke up the no-hitter with a two-out single in the seventh. Deville went the distance for his second win of the year, allowing only two hits for the game.
Alex Moore (1-1) took the loss, allowing four runs - two earned - over 3-2/3 innings.
The Tritons return to action on Tuesday, hosting Warner (Fla.) University with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 PM.
