BASEBALL GAMEDAY: Tritons to Host Gyrenes in Midweek Matchup

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Coming off a two-game sweep over Colorado Christian, the Eckerd baseball team looks to keep momentum with a midweek matchup against the Ave Maria Gyrenes.

GAME 5: Ave Maria (3-4) at Eckerd (3-1) | Wednesday 6:00 PM
COVERAGE: Live Stats | Live Video
PROBABLE STARTER: Nick Alonzo (2015: 2-2, 6.44 ERA)

LAST TIME OUT: Eckerd followed its home-opening defeat against Flagler with two high-powered victories over the Colorado Christian Cougars, 10-3 and 12-0. In game one last Friday, the Tritons broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning with Rowdy Andrews sacrifice fly before blowing the game open with a five-run eighth inning. EC recorded 16 hits during Saturday's blowout with Lucas Luopa batting a perfect 4-for-4.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: Eckerd currently holds a four-game winning streak over the Gyrenes dating back to March 19, 2014. Last season, the Tritons won 4-3 in the first meeting on February 18 and 5-0 the second time around on March 18. The most recent Gyrenes victory was on March 18, 2013 in a 10-inning contest that finished with a 14-12 final decision.

RETURN OF ALONZO: Nick Alonzo's last pitching appearance occurred on April 21 of last season at Warner. Alonzo entered in the bottom of the 4th inning with a running on first and nobody out, but he retired the first three batters he faced. He allowed five hits and no runs during his five innings of work while striking out five batters and was credited with the victory.

SLUGFEST: In its first four games of the season, Eckerd has recorded 52 hits. That feat was not accomplished last season until its seventh game of the year when the Tritons recorded six hits against the Gyrenes on February 18.

RUNNING OF THE BULLPEN: 15 pitchers have already seen time on the mound for Eckerd with no pitcher appearing in more than two contests. Alex Moore and Jack Silberman are the only two Tritons to throw in at least five innings. With Alonzo projected to start, that would leave five pitchers still looking to make their debut and earning a place in the regular rotation.
