ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - As the regular season winds down, the Eckerd men's basketball team continues its fight for the regular-season Sunshine State Conference crown as the Tritons travel to face Lynn University on Saturday at 4:00 PM.
Â
ABOUT THE FIGHTING KNIGHTS- The final games of the regular season conference schedule are as important for Lynn as they are for Eckerd. The Knights enter the weekend in a tie for fifth place in the SSC standings with Tampa but are only a half-game ahead of Florida Tech, Nova Southeastern and Florida Southern in a crowded half of the conference. Lynn would need to win out to have a chance to finish fourth and host a game in the conference tournament.
- Lynn enters today's game looking to snap a three-game losing streak, coming off a pair of narrow road losses to Saint Leo and Palm Beach Atlantic. Its last win came on January 27 over Nova Southeastern, 72-65.
- The Knights feature one of the conference's top scorers in Fred Landers. The 6-foot-4 senior averages 21.4 points per game and has scored 30 or more three times. Eckerd held him to a season-low 10 points in their first matchup this season.
- Lynn has had its struggles on the defensive end at times this season, ranking seventh in the conference allowing 83.0 points per game.
ABOUT THE TRITONS- With four games remaining, Eckerd trails Barry by one game for first place in the SSC. The Tritons are tied with Rollins for second place and hold a 1.5-game lead over Saint Leo.EC split the season series with both Saint Leo and Rollins, and still has to pay a visit to Barry later this month.
- Eckerd bounced back from consecutive losses last week to score a 60-52 win over Embry-Riddle on Wednesday night. The defensive-minded Tritons held ERAU to just 28.1 percent shooting from the floor.
- Speaking of defense, that's been one of Eckerd's strong suits all year long. The Tritons rank first in the conference and 28th in Division II in scoring defense, allowing just 68.4 points per game. EC also tops the conference in defensive field goal percentage (40.4 percent), a figure that ranks 21st nationally.
- On Wednesday,
Jerrick Stevenson became the No. 5 all-time leading scorer in Eckerd program history, surpassing Paul O'Halloran (1972-76) with 1332 career points. He still has a ways to go to catch up to the No. 4 spot on the list, held by Kerwin Thompson with 1489 career points.
LOOKING BACKEckerd pulled out to a 15-point halftime lead and expanded it to 20 early in the second half, then fended off a late push by the Knights that saw them get within nine points. EC closed out a 70-56 win on January 13 in the McArthur Center, getting 12 points each from
Drushaun McLaurn and
Trevon Young.
