ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - After a successful Thanksgiving week for both teams, the Eckerd basketball squads resume Sunshine State Conference play tonight hosting Lynn University in the McArthur Center at 5:30 and 7:30 PM.
ABOUT THE FIGHTING KNIGHTS: Lynn has already shown improvement under second-year head coach Julia Huddleston, an Eckerd alumus. Â The team's last four games have all been decided by four points or fewer, with Lynn winning two including a 57-54 conference victory over Palm Beach Atlantic. Â Only three players return from last year's team and newcomer Paola Vazquez leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.0 points per game. Â Another newcomer, Marta Oledzka, is the SSC's tallest player at 6-foot-6.Â
CAREER DAYS: Three Tritons scored new career highs over the weekend at the EC Thanksgiving Classic, led by
Kacie Juday who did it twice with back-to-back 19-point performances. Â
Anna Deegan netted a career-high 18 points on Saturday while freshman
Brooke Juday scored 12 points in both games while going 12-of-15 from the floor.
RUN IT UP: On Saturday, Eckerd scored its most points in a game in almost eight years after a 92-52 win over Millersville (Pa.). Â The last time that the program broke the 90-point barrier was on January 23, 2008, with 98 points against Saint Leo in the McArthur Center.
Â
ABOUT THE FIGHTING KNIGHTS: Lynn snapped a three-game losing streak on Sunday with a 79-69 win over Lee (Tenn.) University, aided by a career-high 31 points from Marquan Botley. Â The Knights take more perimeter shots than anyone else in conference, averaging nearly 28 3-point attempts per game although they have only connected at a 27.3 percent rate thus far. Â Botley (22.0 points per game) and Jamal Palmer (15.6 ppg) lead the guard-oriented offense.
TO THE WIRE: Four of Eckerd's seven games this season have come down to the last shot with EC going 2-2 in those games. Â Mostly recently, Eckerd forced a last-second miss on Saturday in an 83-82 win over Colorado Christian. Â EC won both its conference tournament semifinal and championship games last year after opponents missed on last-second game-tying opportunities.
BALANCED ATTACK: Eckerd's triangle offense is again creating a balanced scoring effort with four players averaging in double-figures heading into tonight's game. Â Sophomore
Drushaun McLaurn leads the team with 13.1 points per game while
Kevin Walsh (12.4),
Trevon Young (12.0) and
Blake Morrow (11.0) also average 10 or more per game. Â Young scored a career-best 27 points on Saturday while Morrow netted 23 on Friday.
